About the Presenters: 

Dave O'Brien, CPA, MFin

Dave O’Brien is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) and a Senior Engagement Manager at Sapling Financial Consultants Inc. He began his career in public accounting, working for four years at a mid-sized accounting firm where he gained extensive experience analyzing financial statements across various industries. After cutting his teeth in public accounting, Dave furthered his education by completing a Master of Finance degree at Wilfrid Laurier University, to complement his background. This experience sharpened his ability to identify key financial insights.

Since joining Sapling in 2021, Dave has led numerous engagements across Sapling’s various service offerings, including Private Company valuations, M&A Due Diligence, Financial Modelling and Financial Planning and Analysis. Dave has helped grow the diligence practice, overseeing the preparation of Quality of Earnings reports for mid-market transactions in industries ranging from healthcare to aviation. Additionally, Dave has experience in operational and budget modelling, valuations, and data analytics.

Thomas Xu

Thomas is a Consultant at Sapling Financial Consultants. Before joining Sapling, he earned an Honours Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto, majoring in Physics and Economics. His cross-disciplinary background has equipped him with strong quantitative analytical skills and a solid understanding of the economic frameworks that drive business decision-making. Upon graduation, Thomas transitioned into finance and consulting, and has since passed the Level III of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Program.

At Sapling, Thomas focuses on full deal cycle advisory, executing and supporting on multiple engagements across financial modeling, due diligence, FP&A reporting, forecasting, and M&A transaction support. He has worked closely with clients to develop financial supports and insights across various aspects of their financial activities.

Most recently, Thomas provided buy-side deal advisory services to a startup healthcare private equity fund for its first acquisition, supporting the transaction through the full deal cycle. He has also built an investor-grade financial model for a potential tax equity transaction in the renewable energy sector and developed a real estate portfolio model to enhance a client’s FP&A capabilities.
